Plaza Rehabilitation Project Begins at Airport
Restricted Access to the Front Curb
On Monday, May 19, 2008, the Roanoke Regional Airport Commission began a plaza security upgrade and rehabilitation project, which will affect traffic in front of the building and passengers entering or exiting the terminal. The front plaza of the terminal building is being rehabilitated to provide aesthetically pleasing security protection for the glass fronted terminal, accompanied by improved sidewalks, lighting, and outdoor seating for airport patrons. During construction, the first two vehicular traffic lanes in front of the terminal, including portions of the passenger loading/unloading areas, will be closed.
One half hour of free parking will be available in the short term lot for the convenience of passengers who are dropping off or picking passengers, or need a short time to safely load or unload baggage. The roadways approaching the front of the terminal will have signs advising patrons to use the short term lot and airport law enforcement officers who will be directing traffic. Passengers are strongly encouraged to go directly to the short term lot and take advantage of the half hour free parking rather than trying to navigate the front of the terminal building and construction.
This twenty-two week construction project will be completed in early fall of 2008, at a cost of approximately $420,000.00. Funding for the project is provided through state aviation entitlement grant funds and local airport capital funds.
The Airport Commission deeply appreciates your patience during the construction of this important public improvement and pledges to do all that it can to make your passage through the Airport as convenient as possible.
